What improvements can you suggest to make MEC better? Is there something that you can do immediately that will improve our school?
We want to know what you think!!!! So tell us your thoughts!!!

I think to brighten the school up, how about we repaint the class rooms with brighter paint
such as navy blue and dark blue or something that. we could also have a change in school tops such as instead of light blue we can have dark blue with white……

Something that most of the school population would agree with, would be uniform/hair/piercings, etc.
At the moment, the school is coming off as denying our individuality. And there would be a whole lot of others who’d agree.
We can still be proud of our uniform, and our school, and still come off as a positive and welcoming school to the outside community without looking like clones.
If Mount Erin let us express our individuality, we’d be happier to go to school, and we’d be happier as individuals.
During puberty, we find it incredibly hard to find who we are as people, and we’re going to be trying a whole lot of different styles. If Mount Erin doesn’t let us express ourselves, i.e, “non-natural hair colour,” then what’s the point of even trying to be ourselves when we’re told to be like everyone else.

Thank you for your concerns regarding respect to individuality. The college board makes decisions regarding the expectations of uniform/hair/piercings. This board is made up of the parents, community members and staff at Mount Erin College. The school has a clear image in which it wants to project to the community and this includes students wearing the uniform as outlined in the school diary. Proper school shoes were brought into the college under the OHS outlines, which states that staff and students must wear appropriate footwear. This is to protect them from harm.
When you enter the workforce in the future, there are many jobs that require you to wear the uniform as outlined by the company. For example: Police Force. This is so that members are clearly recognizable by the public. Police are required to wear each item of the uniform including ‘police socks’.
Lucky for you, school is only 6 hours a day. This means that outside those hours you will be able to express yourself individually. Try not to see uniform expectations as a bad thing. Look at it as a positive, that the school wants to project a positive image of itself to the community.

Yes! And we also have sunscreen located in each of the teacher offices for students if they require. On Swimming Sports days, we have teacher’s who are on duty to carry the sunscreen around.

I think that you should be able to express yourself and not have to be pushed into the never ending line of high school clones. Say you were someone that wanted pink hair. There should be no regulations on that. Say you liked punk music and peircings. You should be able to show that in a sensible way. Individuality is the key to being happy and nowing your special. You can tell some one their special, but it also helps to let them show how special they think they are.

Hi GeeGee,
Fortunately for you school is only 6hrs per day. This means that you can express yourself individually outside of these hours.
In regards to the schools uniform and dress code policy, this is created by the College Board.
The College Board is made up of mostly parents and few teachers who decide what image MEC wants to project to the community. As long as you are apart of the college, you are expected to adhere to a certain image. This is the same in many workplaces such as McDonalds or even the Police.
If you feel you would like to change the policy, I suggest you join the College Board and make your suggestions.
Thanks for your response.

i think if the teachers set us an assignment that we chose what to do it on. within boundaries of course but like they say do an assignment on some one a movie or a band or a book then we choose one of them and do that how we like.

Great idea Shane. Perhaps next time you could suggest this to your teacher. If it doesn’t conflict with the coursework/ learning standards.
